Kenneth
B. Slater
1959-1969
Kenneth B. Slater began the
study of the comet with his father, George. Upon graduation from the New
York Military Academy, he joined the U.S. Marine Band and played First
Trumpet in the Band and Orchestra for 10 years. The next ten were spent as
Comet Soloist with the U.S. Army Field Band touring the world. From
1959-1969, he served as Director of the Hagerstown Municipal Band.
During his lifetime in music, he has also served as Director of the Almas
Temple Shrine Band in D.C., the Shippensburg Band in Shippensburg, PA and
performed with the National Concert Band in Washington. He has taught
privately in the area and has appeared as a clinician, soloist and
conductor on numerous occasions.
He maintained membership in many Masonic organizations, the Pennsylvania
Bandmasters Association and the American Bandmasters Association. Mr Slater
died in 2005.

Joseph
Leptich
1969
Joseph M. Leptich was born in
1912. He and his wife owned and operated the former Martin Jewelry Store on
East Washington Street in Hagerstown for many years. His love of music
started when he was young and lasted through his whole life. He played
clarinet in the Germantown Symphony Orchestra in Philadelphia, National
Guard Band, Lancaster Symphony, New Golden Band and the Hagerstown
Municipal Band. Mr. Leptich played clarinet in the Trinity Lutheran Sunday
School Orchestra before taking the baton as its long time director. He was
also the director of the Hagerstown Municipal Band in 1969. Mr. Leptich
died in 1977.

Michael
Maglio
1969-1974
Michael Maglio is a native of
Haverhill, Massachusetts. He graduated from Lowell University in
Massachusetts and has advanced degrees from Columbia University, L'Ecole
Normale de Musique and Le Conservatoire in Paris, France. He has had
conducting experience in Long Beach, New York, Great Neck, NY, Pittsburgh,
PA and the surrounding Pittsburgh area. He is Professor of Music Education
at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
